Answer the following questions in no less than 300 words but no greater than 1000 words put together...
Character's background (their past and present): Not much is known of Orlin's past before he ascended, however, once he assumed a higher plane of existence, he assisted a planet called Velona resist the parasitic Goa'uld by helping them build advanced weaponry. He was banished to Velona once the people started using the Alteran technology to conquer other worlds. The other Ancients exterminated the people on Velona, dooming Orlin to be exiled alone.
He was alone for a few hundred years until following SG-1 back through the Stargate to Earth. There, he forced himself to descend to the normal plane, in order to have a new life, and to pursue Samantha Carter. However, after finding out that the SGC planned on reactivating the weapon on Velona, Orlin built a mail order, one-use Stargate from things on the Internet, as well as a gemstone from a toaster, and Gated back to stop them.
Orlin was shot trying to stop the weapon activating, however the other Ancients allowed him to re-ascend to stop the weapon.
Character's personality: Orlin is an Ascended being, and a member of a race known as the Alterans. As such, many aspects of his personality are beyond the understanding of humans, however, this is mostly due to the fact he spent several hundred, possibly thousands, of years on a higher plane of existence.
He does, however, show many human personality traits, such as love, self-sacrifice and such like, mostly because the Alterans were the first evolution in human form, it is more likely that these personality traits were passed from Alterans to Humans. Orlin, in particular, is an example of this. When we first encounter him, it is on a planet called Velona. He was banished by the other Ascended Alterans, known as the Ancients (or the “Others”), for breaking one of the core rules: Do not interfere with the natural development of lower races. Orlin gave them the knowledge to build a weapon to help defend them against the Goa’uld. Once they saved themselves, however, they began to plot on conquering other people with the technology Orlin gave them the knowledge to build. Whilst Orlin didn’t know this would happen, that’s the reason the rule exists. The Others took action and destroyed the people of Velona and banished Orlin to the devastated planet, alone, for his actions.
Over the next few hundred years, Orlin was alone. He thought, at many times, that he was going insane from the loneliness. Eventually, however, SG-1 arrived on Velona. Orlin was instantly taken with Maj. Samantha Carter, and attempted to perform something known as “Essence Sharing” with her, to convey his feelings. However, as she was not ready, due to the strength of his mind, the process caused her to pass out. Orlin, instead, headed through the Stargate back to Earth with SG-1 to follow Sam back.
He eventually made contact with her the day after, taking his Spectral Form to appear human to not startle her overmuch. However his approach still seems too forward, causing Maj. Carter to call out a team from the SGC to investigate when he appears, suddenly, in her kitchen. This may be due to his lack of a need to use control that humans are used to, such things not being necessary on a higher dimensional plane, and linked to his hundreds of years of isolation on a desecrated planet.
As he spends more time on Earth, and eventually retakes human form, he begins to make his mind up about his future. As he descended to human form, he has a finite existence. Although he came to Earth to hopefully strike a relationship up with Samantha Carter, he states that, if nothing comes of it, it’s fine, and he’ll find something else to do, as he has a new life to live.
Ancients have the ability to, if they wish, retain some of the knowledge of their Ascended selves. Taking too much, however, proves dangerous, as the brain of their physical form is unable to contain the knowledge of an Ascended being. Orlin, however, does not show how much knowledge he retains. He does, however, use what he does know, whether it is creating a gemstone, or a one-use Stargate.
In summary, there is much to Orlin that is unknown. He is enigmatic, but doesn’t seem too interesting. His experiences mean that he won’t be quick to display his intelligence or true form too easily, but he is also shown to be curious of other races, and shows a willingness to interact with them.
Character's skills/abilities/powers: Being an evolved, or ascended, life-form offers Orlin a few powers over the "lower" planes of existence. The ability to shift between corporeal and energy-based forms at will, the control of the environment and weather in the immediate area, telepathy, telekinesis, the ability to exist in the vacuum of space. He can evolve and de-evolve lower life forms up to his current plane and back, can warp reality to create objects at will, as well as ressurect, smite or heal any human-based life-form. His ability to take in knowledge is also drastically increased, being able to grasp most things incredibly quickly. Full description is here, but the basic gist is that the Ancients have full control over the planes lower than them. Orlin, however, will not use these powers, or reveal that he has them, unless absolutely necessary due to the Ancient's rule of non-interference.
Any special equipment your character is bringing along? This includes weaponry, magic items, etc.: None.
Are you bringing your character to
ten_fwd from another game? If you are, which game?: No
If you answered yes above, briefly summarize how they were changed by and what challenges they faced in the climate of their previous game(s): N/A
Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them? It will be interesting to see how a near-omnipotent being will deal with being ripped from their home dimension to a point where they're not quite as powerful anymore.
